WHAT IS SCAPE?

SCAPE—Southern California Artists Painting for the Environment—was founded in early 2002 and has grown to over 200 members, a diverse group including nationally known artists, students, patrons and even gallery owners. The membership is open to everyone who would like to participate. The Santa Barbara NewsPress arts writer, Josef Woodard, recognized members of SCAPE as “artists who find plenty to paint about in the area’s unspoiled wilds and who are intrinsically passionate about preserving nature’s beauty in our midst.”

Our goals are to raise money to protect open spaces, to increase public awareness of environmental and conservation issues, and to promote camaraderie and provide opportunities for exhibition and education for outdoor painters.

SCAPE has raised money for the Environmental Defense Center, Community Environmental Council, the Santa Barbara Botanic Garden, UCSB’s Sedgwick Reserve, Coal Oil Point Reserve, the Land Trust for Santa Barbara County, the Santa Barbara Museum of Natural History, and Channelkeeper among others. To date, over $78,000 has been donated to these causes.

SCAPE has over 200 members who participate in our paint-outs, workshops, exhibitions and on our Board. All are welcome to join us. We plan 2 or 3 shows every year and each show is juried. Membership is open year-round. The membership form and more information are available at www.s-c-a-p-e.org.
