Workshops(Click here to return to main workshops menu) Announcing a new SCAPE workshop by Glenna Hartmann
Plein Air WorkshopFriday, Saturday & Sunday September 22-24, 2006 A three-day workshop designed for those who enjoy working with pastel and who want to develop on-site painting skills.
There will be location demos, individual attention and a group critique, with lots of time for plein air painting. Emphasis will be on organizing strong compositions from the complexity of choices that nature provides, learning to simplify, and understanding the elements of atmospheric perspective. We will work on incorporating directional light as well as our own emotional inspiration into the painting. Students will be given the fundamental principles of landscape painting, and the encouragement to explore their own personal styles. Glenna Hartmann studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and was awarded a traveling scholarship that allowed her seven months of independent study in Europe. After moving to Southern California in 1975, her focus on figurative work, portraiture and animals gradually shifted to pure landscape. “ I found painting the vast landscape around me to be quite daunting at first, but over time I learned a great deal about plein air painting techniques from my artist friends in Santa Barbara.” This group of friends became the Oak Group, which today is nationally recognized for their preservation efforts they have donated through their art sales nearly one million dollars to environmental causes. Be sure to see Glenna's exhibition at the Easton Gallery from September 9 through October 15.Glenna’s work has been featured in many art magazines such as Art of the West and The Pastel Journal as well as five books, including most recently Pure Color: The Best of Pastel by North Light Books. She is a signature member of the Plein Air Painters of America, the California Art Club and the Laguna Plein Air Painters Association, and is represented by the Easton Gallery in Montecito, Coleman Fine Art in Charleston, SC, and The Davis Gallery in Genoa, Nevada.
