“Looking for a new direction in your painting, and stimulating, fresh ideas? Want to hone your skill with watercolor and expand the range of what the medium can do? This intensive five-day workshop will explore the realm of color and composition, for more expressive, personal and successful painting. The aim is to refine and expand the understanding of color choices and to become more sensitive to the role color plays to convey the artist’s intent. The focus will go beyond color theory and traditional compositional themes to develop the intuitive senses. Spend five days in beautiful downtown Santa Barbara a block from the beach in a relaxing and artistic atmosphere.” Ruth Ellen Hoag

Ruth started painting after a long career as a musician. Working mainly in watercolor, her style is expressive and immediate. With a nontraditional use of watercolor, she brings a distinctive dynamic to the medium. As a figurative painter, she finds anyone involved in activity as engaging subjects with movement resonating throughout the painting plane. More quiet paintings of landscapes and nude studies are intimate and serene.

Ruth’s paintings have won awards in local and national exhibits and have appeared in numerous publications including a four-page article in the Spring 2005 issue of The Palette. Commissions include The Rubicon Theatre in Ventura, Santa Barbara City College Theatre Dept. and the San Ysidro Guest Ranch. Her work also can be found in private collections throughout the United States and abroad. In Santa Barbara, Ruth is represented by Delphine Gallery.
