SUN SHINES ON ART ALONG THE CREEK
In spite of unseasonable rain at our ingathering, the sunshine came out for ART ALONG THE CREEK. We had a great crowd enjoying the art, music, and the sylvan creekside setting. We sold 26 paintings for over $12,000, with another sale or two that may yet be consummated! Several painters and a mosaic artist demonstrated their work. Some wonderful musicians added magic – Patricia Rushton, Marion Smith, and Robert Winokur on the harp, Lawrence Wallin on the banjo and Tony Johansen with Glendessary Jam, an oldtime acoustic band.
Five artists won ribbons and cash prizes of $100 each. Winners were:
| Best portrayal of theme: |
Lawrence Wallin for “Below Mission Creek Dam” |
| Best landscape: |
Nancy Tunnell for “Standing Alone.” (Sold.) |
| Best abstract: |
Sally Hamilton for “Opposites Attract.” (Sold.) |
| Best portrait/figurative: |
Gail MacBride Kinney for “Silent Reflection” |
| Beneficiary’s Choice: |
Cree Mann for “Mission Creek Montage.”(Sold.) |
“Many thanks Keane Roberts, our intrepid juror.”
Thanks to everyone who helped plan, publicize, set up, curate, hang, and take down the show, who submitted work, and who volunteered at the ingathering and the show to make it such a success. I especially thank my co-chairs, Jerry Martin and J.T. Turner, and volunteer extraordinaire Filiberto Lomili. It was a positive experience to partner with Phoenix, and we are happy to have helped raise funds for their creek habitat restoration project, a most worthy cause!

CALL FOR ENTRIES
Santa Barbara County Parks 2009 Calendar
SCAPE members have the opportunity to participate in this exceptional Call to Artists. Please note the deadline is May 16 for entries
Santa Barbara County Parks and the county’s revived Park Foundation are considering the production of a 2009 calendar that will feature 12 of the county’s most scenic parks.
We invite submissions of color artwork from area artists that depict a county park for inclusion in this first-ever County Parks calendar. We are planning to seek a national distributor for the calendar and its placement in local bookstores and retail outlets and in national book chains. Distribution of the calendar will both help to increase the visibility of Santa Barbara County’s parks and open spaces and to raise private funds to supplement public funding for the county’s park system.
Parks that are to be highlighted include:
- Goleta Beach
- Jalama Beach
- Arroyo Burro Beach
- Nojoqui Falls
- San Marcos Foothills Preserve
- Lake Cachuma
- Rincon Park
- Waller Park
- Lookout Park
- Guadalupe Dunes
- Ocean View Park
- Manning Park
Submissions (up to 3 per artist) should be made in electronic form (jpeg or giff format) on or before May 16, 2008 to:
Erik Axelson, Deputy Director
Santa Barbara County Parks
axelson@co.santa-barbara.ca.us
Entries will be reviewed by a committee that includes County Parks staff, a representative of the Santa Barbara County Art Commission, and representatives from the artist group SCAPE. Winning entries will be selected by June 1, 2008.

Annual Membership Party on April 3
The SCAPE Annual Membership Party and art exhibit was held on April 3 to coincide with the popular “First Thursday” tradition of art events in downtown Santa Barbara. The Casa de la Guerra historic house museum dating from 1819, maintained by the Santa Barbara Trust for Historic Preservation (SBTHP) and listed on the National Register of Historic Places, was the venue for this year’s party. The SBTHP sponsored this exhibit and was its beneficiary.
The party began with a lovely reception and festivities open to the public. Music played in the courtyard and refreshments were served compliments of the SBTHP as part of the “First Thursday” events. The reception was very well attended by SCAPE members and the general public.
The exhibit “No Boundaries" was designed to thank SCAPE Board and committee members for all their work throughout 2007-2008 by showcasing their paintings at this invitational exhibit. The artwork represented the history and lifestyles of the community both past and present: Santa Barbara's people, natural environment and architecture. Works were displayed on the walls among the historic artifacts in the museum.
Later in the evening the SCAPE Board and members met in a characteristic room inside the museum to acknowledge SCAPE’s phenomenal success over the past six years, to honor the many beneficiaries and to welcome new Board members for the coming year. Sally Hamilton presided as MC over the meeting, mentioning examples of SCAPE’s success in organizing shows, paint-outs, and workshops. Marcia Burtt, SCAPE founder and past President, was also present. Other past Presidents recognized were Karen Robertson, Susan Belloni, Kim Snyder and then the new incoming President Meggi MacKenzie. Susan Belloni gave a report about the fourteen plus environmental groups who have benefited financially from SCAPE’s twenty shows over the past six years. The outgoing Board members were presented with gifts. Kim Snyder as outgoing President then handed over a golden paintbrush to Meggi as a symbol of her new leadership. Meggi then introduced her new Board and spoke about SCAPE’s upcoming shows, paint-outs and workshops. Margaret Nadeau, the Entertainment Chair for the annual party, drew a number for a $50 gift certificate at Art Essentials and the lucky winner was Leigh Sparks.
Cakes celebrating SCAPE with “Happy Anniversary” were served on the veranda with strawberries, grapes and coffee. Members and guests chatted and enjoyed the celebration. Margaret was assisted by an entertainment committee: Maxine Alvarez, Susan Stanfield, Gary Forssell, Kim Zolan and Barbara Underwood. Toni Clark, the SBTHP caterer, was so helpful with coffee and supplies for the party. Special thanks go to Jared Brach, in charge of Public Relations and Membership Coordinator for SBTHP, for all his help above and beyond the call of duty. Not only did he accompany the SCAPE group to paint in Santa Ynez on a special Saturday paint-out at the Santa Inés Mission Mills but also he met with us many times and even helped us take down the exhibit.
It was a wonderful opportunity to celebrate with the public, patrons, beneficiaries and most importantly with our fellow members, artists and friends. Eight paintings were sold that night with 40% of each sale donated to the SBTHP, 50% to the artist, and 10% to SCAPE.
