For March We Had A Workshop with
Phil Starke

Oil, Acrylic and Pastel Two Days Plein Air and One Day Studio
Tuscon artist Phil Starke came to Santa Barbara! We' did two days in the field and the third day in the studio. Phil helped us learn to react quickly and simply to shapes and colors, explore the thought process of mixing color outside, and techniques and brushwork. The third day was in the studio and focused on how to use the outdoor color sketch or photograph to develop painting in the studio, color mixing, equipment and supplies, and setting goals.
He did two demonstrations a day and provided daily critiques and individual assessment.
Phil has a video on his website that shows his teaching philosophy and style, www.philstarke.com/videos.htm. Worthwhile to watch!
Phil studied at the Art Institute of Chicago & the American Academy of Art. Currently living in Tucson, AZ, Phil is represented by Settlers West Gallery in Tucson, Legacy Gallery in Scottsdale and Jackson, WY, and The Grapevine Gallery in Oklahoma City. He is a member of the California Art Club. Phil recently had a feature article in the March/April 2009 issue of Art of the West Magazine. For more information you can visit his website.
Besides numerous national venues, Phil Starke teaches regularly at Tucson Art Academy and the Scottsdale Art School. www.philstarke.com

In April We Had Santa Barbara Coastal & Inland Painting
On Location Oil Painting Workshop with Ray Roberts

We spent three uninterrupted days painting outdoors at a workshop for all levels of artists working in oil. In this workshop landscape and coastal scenes were the subject matter with the focus on improving drawing skills, seeing values and color correctly and understanding their relationships to each other.
Roberts demonstrated his approach to painting outdoors, and included many optional exercises designed to refine outdoor painting skills, color and value sensitivity, and design.
Emphasis was on painting quick sketches. Quick sketches require the artist to see what is the essence of a scene and capture everything necessary in the most effective use of time and brushwork.
