SCAPE Newsletter - August 2023

Message from our PRESIDENT

By Linda Faye Collins

Hello All,

Things are looking up, as we have had some success recently in filling some important SCAPE board positions.

It is my pleasure to introduce Kathy McGill, a woman of many talents, who has generously agreed to take on the position of vice-president of SCAPE’s board of directors. She will be succeeded me as President next year.  I will be staying on as treasurer.

According to Kathy, she is a relative newcomer to Santa Barbara and to painting. She moved here in 2016 after retiring from corporate life, the last 20 years of which were spent in various managerial and executive positions in Europe, Africa and Southeast Asia. She started drawing and painting soon after arrival, and now spends as much time as possible painting - primarily plein air landscapes in oil, but also figurative and portrait work. She also attends a weekly life drawing session to work on her drawing skills.

While painting and drawing are her primary passions, Kathy also serves as a Commissioner on the Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation Commission.  She is currently on the De La Guerra Plaza Revitalization advisory committee, including the Arts and Culture subcommittee, and she is Vice President of the PARC foundation, which supports Santa Barbara Parks and Recreation.

The common themes here are art, the outdoors and community, so serving on the SCAPE board should be a good fit!

It is also my pleasure to belatedly introduce another talented lady, Kellie Stoelting, who has been the Secretary for the SCAPE Board since May 2022.

Kellie says that she gets out plein air painting of landscapes in and around Santa Barbara and painting figures in an abstract style. Her mediums are primarily oil and watercolor, but she has experience in acrylic also. When she’s not painting, you can find her working part-time at State Street Insurance. She recently got her accident, health and life insurance license. Past work experience has included Customer Service Manager for TrueVision, now a subsidiary of Alcon, and Artist Relations Manager for Seymour Duncan, a local guitar pickup company. But by far, her most rewarding and challenging work is in the fine art of babysitting her three grandsons.

We have also secured the Carpinteria State Park as our annual membership picnic venue.  You will want to bring your paint supplies with you as there are many paintable scenes there.   In addition, we are about to sign the contract for the use of some of the lovely Music Academy facilities for our October exhibition to benefit the Santa Barbara Trails Council.   More on those two occasions below-----------

Calvin Liang’s Santa Barbara Workshop Description

Calvin Liang will be teaching a 4-day workshop with two days of outdoor painting. Two days will be spent working on a single studio painting based on photos you take on location. Calvin will begin with a demonstration then he will spend time with each student throughout the rest of the day. It is recommended to bring a laptop or tablet for the studio days. Alternatively, you may have color prints of your reference photos printed locally.

Plein air painting is a foundational part of training the eye to better understand the concepts of composition, design, and color harmony. The lessons will include:

1.      How to plan a composition that will be effective for the artist’s intentions and preferences.
2.      How to better see and use warm and cool color in the landscape.
3.      How to command hardness and softness of the edges to create space in a painting.
4.      How to simplify the subject matter through the use of basic design, value, color and drawing skills.
5.      How to consider the reasons for different paint surface textures, and brushstroke direction over the forms; and
6.      How to get the best possible results in a short time.
